Simplify these confusing and tricky suffix spellings for students! With these morphology games and independent activities for Spelling-Meaning Patterns among Suffixes -ENT/-ENCE, -ANT/-ANCE, -ABLE/-IBLE, you can go beyond basic suffix worksheets to help them practice this spelling skill. This morphology games bundle focuses on spelling issues that challenge even proficient spellers: uncertainties on when to choose –ent or –ant and –ence or -ance, confusion between using -able and -ible, and not knowing the appropriate doubling of the final consonant when adding inflectional endings to multisyllabic words. Students are also introduced to prefix assimilation, specifically the prefix –in and why and when it is also spelled il-, im- and ir-.
The download for each sort includes a partner game and an independent activity (that can also be modified to play with a partner). The partner games found in Unit 8 include Linked!, Assimilation Station, and Double or Nothing board games. The independent activities found in Unit 8 include Suffix Match & Stack and Affix Spin & Fill-In word board activities.

Each partner game involves friendly competition and a recording sheet that makes it easy to check that students understood the word study concepts being studied and to hold them accountable for staying on task.

In Suffix Match & Stack, students match sentence cards containing missing suffixes that are related in spelling and meaning. After making a match, students then must add the word study word to a gridded mat, finding a way to connect it with other words (much like Scrabble ®).
