Product Details

These Area Model for Division Task Cards were designed to scaffold students’ learning and understanding of dividing whole numbers with the area/array model. In this 2 Digit Divisors set, students divide whole numbers in the hundreds and thousands by a 2 digit divisor (division with 3 digit dividend and division with 4 digit dividend).

Do your students also need practice using the area model for division with 1 digit divisors? You can grab those cards individually or get the dividing by 1 digit and 2 digit sets together in this bundle.

As my students worked to learn the area model method to divide 3 and 4 digit dividends, I noticed commonalities among my students who struggled to learn the method:

1) Students have a hard time deciding which initial number to subtract from the dividend;
2) Students struggle to understand what number needs to be placed above the rectangle/box (the other factor or the partial quotient)

To help students better understand the area model for division, I designed these Area Model task cards where I have done the first step by giving for students. Since I want students to see that they can really start from any entry point that makes sense, I did not always use the largest initial number that is possible.

I also created cards with and without the first partial quotient given to the student to provide you with another way to challenge and differentiate your students' practice.

Of course, computation and multiplication fact errors occur regularly as students are learning to divide. To combat this issue, students can check their quotients using multiplication. The student recording sheet I have provided expects students to check their quotient and search for errors if it does not check out.

You get 4 variations with 20 cards of each type for a total of 80 task cards:
✔ 3 and 4 digit dividends (with the first partial quotient given)
✔ 3 and 4 digit dividends (where the first partial quotient is not given)
