Does your word study block need a little pick me up? With these games and independent activities for Beginning Digraphs and Blends, you can transform word study into a highly anticipated time of day for your students in the Letter Name-Alphabetic stage! This bundle engages students in using pictures to help them identify and master the spelling of the single sound in beginning digraphs (ch, sh, th, and wh) and of the consonants in common beginning blends (st, sp, sk, sm, sc, sn, sw, pl, sl, bl, cr, cl, fr, fl, br, bl, gr, gl, pr, dr, tr, qu, and tw).
The download for each sort includes a partner game and an independent game (that can also be modified to play with a partner). The partner games found in Unit 3 include Missing Letters board games. The independent activities found in Unit 3 include a Spin and Cover, a picture board and spinner activity. It is my hope that these activities help you increase student engagement and personal teaching joy during word study, spelling, or word work! ★ Partner Games ★
In the Missing Letters board games, students take turns drawing picture cards and finding the ending/rime of the word on the path that matches the picture card drawn. Students mentally fill in the missing digraph or blend to find a spot to cover on the game board. Game play involves friendly competition and a recording sheet that makes it easy for the teacher to check that students understood the digraphs or blends of their particular game.
