Who are these games and activities for?
These games and activities are designed for students in the early to middle Derivational Relations stage who are already familiar with prefixes and suffixes (affixes) and how they contribute to the meaning of a word. Students as young as 1st grade can benefit from studying Greek and Latin roots, but these games were specifically developed with 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade students in mind.

Why Focus on Latin and Greek Affixes, Roots, and Word Parts?
  • over 60% of words in the English language contain Greek or Latin roots; when we narrow in on science and technology-based content, that number climbs to 90%!
  • a single root can help students generate over 100 words
  • enhancing morphological awareness (how words are made up of parts) and knowledge of word etymology (the history of a word) accelerates students' ability to develop and improve their own vocabulary and increases comprehension skills
  • schools that focus on Greek and Latin roots have shown an increase in standardized reading test scores (Reference 1 and Reference 2)

Greek and Latin roots are the linguistic master key - - - empowering our students to unlock the meanings of words and delivering compounding effects on their vocabulary!

Whether you're looking for hands-on, engaging activities students can complete independently, partner games, centers, or ideas to spice up your small group lessons, these activities covering Latin and Greek Roots and Word Parts have done the creative thinking and planning for you! Since all of the activities in the Volume 1, 2, 3, and 4 bundle utilize games and activities with similar formats, you'll have versatility AND consistency built right in for you and you won’t have to teach students how to play with each new root word list!
