Are your students learning about syllable division and accent? With these games and independent activities for Long Vowel Patterns in Accented Syllables, word study can be transformed into a fun and engaging time for our students in the Syllables and Affixes stage! This bundle focuses on helping students learn to identify the accented or stressed syllable in two syllable words. They also learn to look for familiar long vowel patterns to help them hear the stressed syllable making a clear vowel sound in words in order to know how to pronounce and better spell them.
The download for each sort includes a partner game and an independent game (that can also be modified to play with a partner). The partner games found in Unit 4 include a card game called "Stressed Out". The independent activities found in Unit 4 include a "Four In A Row" game.
It is my hope that these activities help you increase student engagement and personal teaching joy during word study, spelling, or word work. (Aligned to Word Sorts for Syllables and Affixes Spellers Unit 4: Sort 18-Sort 23)

Their goal is to match as many word or picture cards with a draw card (featuring syllable stressed, various long vowel patterns, and assorted wild cards) in order to get rid of all their cards and win the game.

Who are these games and activities for?
> > > These resources were developed with 3rd - 5th graders in mind, but could successfully be used in lower grades within small group lessons and with teacher guidance.
> > > These games and activities are designed for students in the middle of the Syllables and Affixes stage. These students have a strong foundation of knowing and accurately using long-vowel patterns in one-syllable words, however, frequently make mistakes when applying these same patterns to two-syllable words. For example, student may spell "waiter" as "water" or "parade" as "paraid".
These activities provide a great way to add meaningful variety to your word study routine, keeping it fresh and interesting for students. With these activities, your word study block will be a time that students look forward to as they work to master these key spelling and word study concepts!
NOTE: These games and activities are included in the Engaged Spelling All-Access Library. Please do not purchase if you are a member!
