Who are these games and activities for?
These games and activities are designed for students in the middle to late Derivational Relations stage who are already familiar with prefixes and suffixes (affixes) and how they contribute to the meaning of a word. Students as young as 1st grade can benefit from studying Greek and Latin roots, but these games were specifically developed with 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade students in mind.

★ Partner Game ★
In Capture the Uniform with the Tripod, students take turns spinning the spinner and moving their pawns along a game board path, filling in missing roots along the way to reach the end before their opponent does. The fill-in-the-blank (missing root) encourages students to try different roots to create a word. The recording sheet requires students to develop a definition for the words, connecting their definition to the meaning of the root.

★ Independent Activity ★
In Four In A Row, students spin a spinner and find a definition, sentence, or image depicting a word on the game board that follows the root or word part hint they spun. They must cover the space, build the word with letter tiles or write the word on a white board (optional), and record it on their recording sheet. Their goal is to cover four definitions/sentences/images in a row (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally).
