The Letter Name-Alphabetic Spellers stage focuses on building the foundation for reading and spelling. Students in this stage typically fall in kindergarten through early first grade (though some older students may also need this support). Instruction centers on beginning consonant sounds, short vowels in CVC words, word families, digraphs, blends, preconsonantal nasals, and early r-controlled vowels and contractions.
The Within Word Pattern Spellers stage is where students move beyond simple CVC words and begin exploring the many ways vowels can be spelled. Students in this stage typically fall between late first grade and early third grade. While they can usually read most one-syllable words, they often struggle to spell them correctly and are now ready to study common and less common long-vowel patterns, r-controlled vowels, diphthongs, ambiguous vowels, and more.
The Syllables and Affixes Spellers stage is when students shift from single-syllable word study into the world of multisyllabic words. Typically beginning in third grade and extending into upper elementary (and sometimes beyond), students at this stage are ready to explore inflectional endings, syllable juncture patterns, long-vowel patterns in accented syllables, ambiguous and r-controlled vowel patterns, silent consonants, and tricky consonant combinations. This stage also introduces prefixes, suffixes, compound words, homophones, and common spelling generalizations like the EI/IE rule. Students who have a solid grasp of vowel patterns in single-syllable words are now developmentally ready to tackle the challenge of spelling longer, more complex words.
The Derivational Relations Spellers stage is where students begin to connect spelling with meaning on a much deeper level. Typically spanning grades 3–6 (and beyond), students at this stage are fairly proficient with basic spelling and are ready to explore more advanced word study concepts. Instruction focuses on prefixes and suffixes, derivational suffixes, consonant and vowel alternation, and the rich study of Latin and Greek roots. Students also investigate how spelling reflects word meaning, learning how morphology, etymology, and vocabulary intersect. By analyzing how words are built, students not only strengthen their spelling but also expand their vocabulary knowledge and overall language skills.
