With these games and independent activities for Preconsonantal Nasals NG, MP, NT, NK, ND, you can transform word study into a highly anticipated time of day for your students in the Letter Name-Alphabetic stage! This bundle engages students in working with preconsonantal nasals within CVC words ending in -ng, -mp, -nt, -nk, and -nd. Students learn to identify the difference they hear in CVC words ending in a final consonant, like ran, vs. a final consonant blend, like rang or ramp. The n or m are not silent but become harder to hear (we call these "The Mysterious N and M"). Students also learn that the clear short vowel sound they are used to hearing in easy CVC words becomes slightly harder to distinguish, although the vowel is still short.

The activity set for each sort includes a partner game and an independent game (that can also be modified for partner play). The partner board games in Unit 6 all have a fun, magical theme for high engagement and the independent activities include Layer On, a fun word building activity. In the magically-themed board games, students take turns drawing a picture or word card and covering a CVC word on the game board, trying to collect the most words to win the game. All game board activities include words found in the word sort lists aligned with Words Their Way. The game play involves friendly competition and a recording sheet that makes it easy for the teacher to check that students understood the word families of their game.

In Layer On (played much like a popular letter tile game), students spin a final consonant or consonant blend (-ng, -mp, -nt, -nk, and -nd) and match it with a word part card to make a word. They add the word (by writing or building it) to an existing word tower. Students "layer on" as many words as possible to create a word tower with as many words as they can.

Who are these games and activities for?

> > > These games and activities are designed for students at the end of the Letter Name-Alphabetic stage. These students typically spell most easy CVC words correctly, including those containing blends and digraphs. However, because preconsonantal nasals are more elusive and often make the short vowel sound less clear, students may struggle with accurately spelling the words in this unit. These games and activities allow students to pull together what they have learned and give them repeated practice opportunities to become more accurate spellers.
