In the board game, students take turns choosing words that match the vowel pattern they spin and collecting them on their football-themed game boards. The game play involves friendly competition and a recording sheet that makes it easy for the teacher to check that students understood the vowel patterns and hold students accountable to staying on task.

Independent Activity:

In the Match It Up card game, students draw from a pile containing vowel pattern headers, picture cards, and words that include short vowel patterns and CVCe and CVVC long vowel patterns. They must mix and match two cards that belong to the same vowel pattern category.
