The download for each sort includes a partner game and an independent game (that can also be modified to play with a partner). The partner games found in Unit 8 include “Connect 6” board games, a "Guess My Word" game, and a matching game. The independent activities found in Unit 8 include “Memory Match!", ”Spin, Cover, Build, Write", and a "Four In A Row" game.

In the sort and match board game (sort 56), students take turns drawing a card that display a contraction and trying to match it with the expanded form of the contraction on the game board.

In Connect 6 (sorts 55, 57, & 59), students take turns drawing cards that contain a sentence with a missing word. Students must use their knowledge of unaccented syllables, plural endings, and irregular verbs to complete the sentence and cover the space on the game board.

In Guess My Word (sort 58), students choose a word on their board, keeping it a secret from their partner. They then take turns asking questions about the vowel patterns and sounds associated with the word, trying to narrow down the answer and win the game.

Each partner game involves friendly competition and a recording sheet that makes it easy to check that students understood the word study concepts being studied and to hold them accountable for staying on task.

In the “Memory Match!” card games (sorts 56 & 59), students match contractions and their expanded form (sort 56) or past tense verbs with their present tense (sort 59).

In Four In A Row (sort 55), students spin a spinner and find an incomplete word on the game board that follows the beginning syllable spun. They must complete the word by building it with letter tiles (optional) and record it on their recording sheet. Their goal is to complete and cover four words in a row (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally).

In Spin, Cover, Build, Write (sorts 57 & 58), students choose a picture or word board from the 4 versions, spin for a vowel pattern or clue, and cover words or images of words that match the vowel pattern or hint they spun. Students then build and record the word that they covered.

> > > These resources were developed with 3rd - 5th graders in mind, but could successfully be used in lower grades within small group lessons and with teacher guidance.

> > > These games and activities are designed for students in the late stages of Within Word Pattern who are reading and writing many words with inflectional endings.
