Impactful and FUN word study?! YES, you can have both! These games focus on Final E words that end in SE and CE (words where -se can make a /z/ or /s/ sound) for Complex Consonant Endings. With the Guess My Word Game and Layer On independent activity, you’ll be sure to increase student engagement and personal teaching joy during word study, spelling, or word work for students in the Within Word Pattern Stage. These activities focus on words that end in -ce and -se with words like please/noise (se = /z/), mouse/chase (se = /c/), and once/voice (ce = /s/). (Aligned to Word Sorts for Within Word Pattern Spellers Sort 46)

Whether you’re looking for hands-on, engaging word study activities for students to complete independently, partner games, centers, or resources to spice up your small group lessons, the creative thinking and planning is done for you with these activities for Final E: SE/CE words! Versatility and consistency (not an oxymoron!) are built right in for you with most of the activities in the Unit 6 bundle having the same format, you won’t have to teach students how to play with each new word sort!
While these games are aligned to Words Their Way, they can be used to complement any word study program or focus with your students. See the preview for detailed lists of the included words!
Partner Game:
In Guess My Word, students choose a word from the word board, keeping it a secret from their opponent. Then students take turns asking questions about the vowel patterns and sounds associated with the word, trying to narrow down their opponent’s secret word to win the game.

Independent Activity:
In Layer On (played much like a popular letter tile game), students spin a complex consonant and match it with a word part card to make a word. They add the word (by writing or building it) to an existing word tower. Students "layer on" as many words as possible to create a word tower with as many words as they can.

Who are these games and activities for?
> > > These resources were developed with 3rd - 5th graders in mind, but could successfully be used in lower grades within small group lessons and with teacher guidance.
> > > These games and activities are designed for students in the late stages of Within Word Pattern. Students should have a firm grasp on long vowel sounds and patterns, including CVCe, CVVC, less common long vowel patterns, r-controlled vowels, and diphthongs and ambiguous vowels before they are developmentally ready to study how vowels affect consonants.
These activities provide a great way to add meaningful variety to your word study routine, keeping it fresh and interesting for students. With these activities, your word study block will be a time that students look forward to as they work to master these key spelling and word study concepts!
