Meaningful word study packed with fun?! YES! With these games and independent activities for Beginning and Ending Complex Consonants, word study can be more engaging for our students in the Within Word Pattern stage! This bundle focuses on silent beginning consonants (kn, wr, and gn), w blends (tw, sw, and qu), triple blends (scr, str, spr, the, shr, spl, and squ), distinguishing between hard and soft g and c, words with final e (-ce, -ve, -se, and -ze), and words with final consonant patterns (-ge, -dge, -ch, and -tch).
The download for each sort includes a partner game and an independent game (that can also be modified to play with a partner). The partner games found in Unit 6 include “make a word” board games, a Match it Up! card game, and “Guess My Word” game. The independent activity for each sort in Unit 6 is “Layer On,” a fun word building game. It is my hope that these activities help you increase student engagement and personal teaching joy during word study, spelling, or word work. Versatility and consistency (not an oxymoron!) are built right in for you with all of the activities in the Unit 6 bundle having the same format, you won’t have to teach students how to play with each new word sort!

★ Independent Activities ★
In Layer On (played much like a popular letter tile game), students spin a complex consonant and match it with a word part card to make a word. Who are these games and activities for?
> > > These resources were developed with 3rd - 5th graders in mind, but could successfully be used in lower grades within small group lessons and with teacher guidance.
> > > These games and activities are designed for students in the late stages of Within Word Pattern. Students should have a firm grasp on long vowel sounds and patterns, including CVCe, CVVC, less common long vowel patterns, r-controlled vowels, and diphthongs and ambiguous vowels before they are developmentally ready to study how vowels affect consonants.
These activities provide a great way to add meaningful variety to your word study routine, keeping it fresh and interesting for students. With these activities, your word study block will be a time that students look forward to as they work to master these key spelling and word study concepts!
NOTE: These games and activities are included in the Engaged Spelling All-Access Library. Please do not purchase if you are a member! If you are considering a purchase of more than one bundle of my word study and spelling games, consider the Engaged Spelling Membership. It is an all-access pass to all of my games for lower than the cost of two mega bundles and offers a payment plan.
