Additionally, students work with short vowel CVC words grouped by initial digraphs (sh, ch, wh, th), initial blends (r-blend and l-blend), final digraphs (sh, ch, th, ss, ck), and final blends (-sk, -st, -sp, -ft, -pt, -lf, -lp, and –lt).

In Connect 5 (sorts 40-42), students take turns drawing a picture or word card and covering the corresponding picture or word on the game board, trying to connect five consecutive spaces to win the game.

In the Say, Listen, Match card game (sort 43), students take turns looking for sound matches. They turn over two picture cards, say the words depicted, and listen to see if the two cards both make the same beginning short vowel sound. This fun game is played much like the card game "Match" with the winner having the most matches at the end of the game.

In the Missing Letters games (sorts 44-52), students take turns finding a fill in the blank word on the path to cover that matches the picture card drawn. All game board activities include words found in the word sort lists aligned with Words Their Way. The game play involves friendly competition and a recording sheet that makes it easy for the teacher to check that students understood the word families of their game.

These students have already been introduced to digraphs and consonant blends and typically spell most blends and digraphs correctly. They have also worked with same-vowel word families as well as mixed-vowel word families and often represent short vowels accurately but may struggle when the support of word families is removed.
